I began my journey in the broadcast industry back in 2021 where I got a role with Ayr United Football Club as part of their media team. During my time assisting the club, I have had the opportunity to work in a variety of media roles that have helped me improve both technically and professionally.
When I first joined the media team, my main responsibility was operating the camera during matches. This involved filming games from the gantry and ensuring key moments were captured clearly for use in match highlights and club TV. Through this role, I developed an understanding of camera operation, positioning, and the importance of concentration during live sporting events.
Working on matchdays also helped me learn how a professional football club operates behind the scenes. I became familiar with working under pressure and cooperating with other members of the media team to ensure content was delivered quickly and efficiently.
Over time, my role within the media team expanded significantly, as other members left I gradually picked up more roles when they got offered to me, including interviewing managers and players before and after matches. Conducting interviews improved my communication skills I learned how to ask clear and engaging questions, listen carefully to responses, and remain professional while representing the club’s media team. Interviewing players and management also helped me build confidence when speaking on camera.
Alongside interviewing, I also became involved in editing match highlights. This required selecting key moments from games, organising footage, and producing engaging highlight packages for supporters to watch online. Through this process, I improved my editing skills and developed a better understanding of digital media production and storytelling through video content, this role also helped me become very familiar using software such a premier pro and photoshop.
My job at Ayr United Media is still on going and progressing, I’ve started to develop some matchday graphics for the club, team line-up graphics and much more, I’m hoping with the more responsibilities I’m given at the club that it will someday develop into a paid role . My time with the club has been amazing and has allowed me to develop so many skills, skills which will be valuable in future employment opportunities.
